I grew up learning to read the Dick and Jane books, I love reading and learning new words and new subjects.
My youngest now 42 was deemed a Slow Learner in reading and math. After a few library trips, later, Dick and Jane, Dr. Suess's books, one paddle used once in 6 weeks he learned to read. Same with math, flashcards, that one, and washing/drying dishes after supper, math also improved, different teacher, his dad. The D-F grades went to A-B grades. He still hates to read. And learns best by hands-on training.
Repetition of both works. If you don't have Dyslexia.
Another brilliant and well-researched article, Frederick.
My only quibble is your concern about McGuffey, (and Laura Ingalls Wilder's use of the word savages to describe those who crossed the Bering Straits and populated the New World before the arrival of white Europeans) using the word "savages" to describe those who raped, kidnapped, scalped, and burned settlers while they were still alive.
Those historic characters, who are now believed to be sweet as Hobbits, spent much of their time warring with other tribes.
My own ancestors were Troglodytes that lived in caves; yet I do not get offended when I accept this fact.
True, the title "savages" has nothing to do with modern humans outside of Washington, DC., and McGuffey's probably should be updated.
Nevertheless, a return to education (vs indoctrination) in American schools would be a blessing. The Hive Mind of the racist, insane, and hate-filled leftists has weakened America to the point where it is only a matter of time before it simply crumbles under its own weight or until another country destroys it.
I went to college at Miami, so I know about the McGuffey readers. The little museum is right across the street from where I spent much of my time, Alumni Hall.
McGuffey’s Eclectic Reader
What an excellent article. Thanks so much. The seeds of globalism run deep - you start by teaching the kids.

Not surprised to see John Dewey and Columbia University, the bastion of Marxist thought, mentioned in the demise of the McGuffey Readers.
Few remember McGuffey readers, those of us who watched Little House on the Prayer probably do.

I learned to read with the McGuffey Readers. A great resource meant to develop thinking adults.
