They were catered to and given special treatment most of their lives which deeply affects them. Remember how shocked everyone was about OJ? How did such a great guy do such a thing? Few knew about his history of sexual assault at USC and how it was covered up because he was such a skilled athlete.
First of all, athletes are simply a microcasm of society.
Many athletes are not overly intelligent. Most college athletes are guided through universities not actually studying anything. They are there to make money for the university.
Violent sports cause many injuries, including concussions and severe joint injuries requiring opiates creating addictions. Many of these guys have street friends, who are along for thecparty. The only true pain killers are opiates. All are addictive.
Most importantly. They play a game. They are not important, other than the game, ergo we should not care about what they have to say. To many of them life, is all about money, sex, power.
Other than the game, I don't care. I don't pay for sports. I won't. Hollywood and the music industry are exactly the same. Lebron James, might have a high school education. I am taking life lessons from that guy with the hood mentality, flaunts wealth, supports violence against women and other races? (Rap and BLM)

We live in an overstimulating, unnatural society. Years ago, before movies, our great-great grandparents learned to sing or play sports or to play a musical instrument. Now, we lay on a sofa, eat chips, and watch the best of the best athletes, drivers, singers, musicians, actors, etc. do whatever they do and they are rewarded and treated like kings and queens. They live in an imaginary world and in many cases, they have evil in their hearts and minds.
Excellent discussion on exactly why all sport has become what it is. I remember the old days when players had real jobs in the off season. I remember when Olympic athletes were amateurs and showed their country’s pride. The bottom line, money corrupts. The owners steal it from us then whine when the players hold their hands out for theirs. The players take theirs and then most don’t perform to even their minuscule actual real worth (like 59 cents). Then pick a cause, and you’re not asked to observe, contribute or join along. No, you have their crap forced down your throat and then you are EXPECTED to agree with, then froth over and conform to that belief otherwise, you are racist, homophobic, mysogenic, whatever. Commit a crime - no worry. No responsibility, no consequence.

Sports has become one big unflushed toilet... the Olympics included... a monument to narcissism. 50 years ago they played because the loved the game. Now they just love themselves. Just shared with a Note.
