Great story. A pleasure to read slowly. I remember that area from the old days but had never heard of Alice or the ferry.

Wonderful history lesson as usual. Too bad women of any color like Alice aren't celebrated or known by our youth. Seems only the notorious are known, like Hanoi Jane. I will never call her anything but the Traitor she was during the Vietnam War, or she champions Abortion too.

Thanks Gail! This is a partial fulfillment of long-standing promise to deliver history about the Founding Women.

Thank you for writing this. More stories of real women like Alice need to be told... and fewer about the so-called courage of the fake ones.

My pleasure. I recently discovered Alice by reading the book "Founding Africans." It is balanced work by David Hackett Fischer that details the bad side of slavery but also shows the good of those who worked to rid slavery and the wonderful contributions of African Americans. A highly recommended book to read.
