This article is a bullseye. I was a teacher for 28 years. Through the years we had workshops on telling us how to teach. We were constantly pressured into schemes like whole language, sight words instead of phonics, and critical thinking where the students had no background content to even think about it. I taught middle school history in a format where they had to memorize certain basic information, recall the basic elements of the historical time period and then practice this in class. Then we would do an activity where critical thinking was utilized through drawing political cartoons, which the kids loved, debates, analyzing film clips, defending a position, inventing something, writing a paper, doing cause and effect, and geopolitics through a war game etc…. Education today is lost.

Marva Collins did not adhere to the Afrocentric focus of many other black independent schools, Bush said. But “she believed children from the inner city, African-American children, can learn at the highest level, no matter what you put in front of them,” he said. “She definitely made an argument that these children are worthy. She represents the best of the independent black schools.” https://www.edweek.org/leadership/marva-collins-famed-chicago-educator-stressed-potential-of-low-income-students/2015/06

Frederick: TY for your thoughtful analysis and several good points. I'm a physicist very interested in this important topic.

What you left out are: 1) the profound importance of the state Science standards being totally perverted (e.g., they have scrubbed the Scientific Method from being taught), and

2) That the objective of the education system should be to produce critically thinking graduates. The opposite is happening.

Today I posted a draft of my Fixing Education Report ("https://c19science.info/Education/Fixing_Education.pdf"). Feel free to email me.

Excellent summation of what happened to our educational system, and why Johnny can't read, write, do math or think.

I have one more thing to add...we must stop VACCINATING our CHILDREN.

True. Good article. When our granddaughter was 12, I gave her some Silver and Turquoise rings for Christmas, she was raised in the Stupid State of Georgia, and she was embarrassed that she could not read the handwrittentten note that went with them. To this day all she can do is read and write in Print. She just had her first baby a few months back. A baby that needs that Special Formula that is hard to find. Hard to realize it's been that long ago.

It is simple to teach both.
